Another summer has quickly come and gone, and here we are all set to go again for the 2023/24 season, in the new championship west division. Ahead of the new season, we sat down with joint Head Coach Ian Moore to get his thoughts on what has been, and what is to come:
Q:Ian you could probably write a book on all of the things that you learned last season, but what were the main things you’ve taken away from that experience?
A:It was a tough season last year , with losing so many of the team that won the plate (9) we lost a huge amount of experience in the squad . Saying that it was great learning curve for the young boys who got put into a very tough physical league. It took time but the improvements that we made throughout the season really showed in the last 6 games where we picked up 4 wins .
Q:This summer has been very different to last year in terms of the league changing with the Championship west introduced. What different challenges are you expecting?
A:Yes very different look in the league this season with us going into the west conference. I think it's really refreshing and exciting for the squad , to have a chance to play and travel to a lot of new teams and grounds. It's also exciting in that we have no idea how these teams play it's going to be a great challenge for all the players and myself and Nic as coaches .
Q:What would represent success this season for the club?
A:As a squad the boys have put their own personal target as what they will see as a successful season which i think is good as they have to hit that standard.
For myself and Nic i think it's more about us being consistent in every game and for the full 80 mins in each game, we had a habit last year of having very good performance in a certain game then in the next these standards had dropped massively. We even seen this alot in same game, where we would have poor start then wake up and put huge effort in to make the game competitive . We must be focused from the start and in every game .
Q:And finally , a tough start with Narberth away first game of the season, what are your thoughts ahead of that one ?
A:Very tough start against a regular top 4 team in the old championship. They have a great squad very tough to beat at they home ground. Also the have 2 great coaches and close mates of mine in Liam gadd and Ricky Guest
I think our target has to be we turn up with the right attitude and focus, have the belief in the way we play , control what we can and we believe we can be competitive and hopefully that be enough to get the result.
The committee and supporters of the club would like to wish all players and coaches the very best for the season ahead.
We look forward to seeing you at Narberth 🔵
